Orangutan Found with 104 Bullets Lodged in Body

A male orangutan named Aan was found, dying, with 104 bullets lodged all over his body in Pangkalan Bun, Central Kalimantan.

When scanning the ape, doctors from the Orangutan Foundation found 37 bullets in his head and 67 others in his body, including in his heart and lungs. The doctors predicted that Aan was also suffering from infections derived from the wounds, tempo.co reported on Wednesday.

Zulfiqri, a doctor treating Aan, said that the infections may have caused his death. The bullets caused vision and hearing impairments. “His left eye is blind already,” he said.

A rescue team from the foundation and the Central Kalimantan Natural Resources Conservation Agency found Aan severely wounded on Oct. 10 in a palm oil plantation.

The foundation said that it would remove the bullets soon. Should the ape survive the operation, he will be released to Sungai Lamandu nature conservatory in Central Kalimantan.

  1. Do not use air rifles to shoot orangutans. Use at least a .22 for better penetration.
