Cleric Certification is Rights Violation

Constitutional Court Justice Mahfud MD considers a proposal by the National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT) to certify Islamic scholars or clerics as a way of minimizing the risk of radicalism to be a violation of human rights.

“I do not agree with the proposal. It is an excessive measure and a violation of human rights. It means that all Muslims would be barred from speaking, whereas in Islam, Muslims are encouraged to spread Islamic teachings and deliver them orally, even if they comprise only one verse,” Mahfud said on the sidelines of the 56th anniversary of Hasanuddin University in Makassar, South Sulawesi, on Monday.
